Currently, my research focus is on North American migratory bat species and their ecology and conservation. Migratory bats play vital roles in their ecosystems that researchers are just beginning to understand. However, hundreds of thousands of bats are killed at wind turbines each year causing rapid population decline and a very real extinction risk. My research aims to understand the ecology of migratory bats in their northern ranges where they are known to go to have their pups in the summer. By understanding their ecology, we can help make informed and effecteive conservation policy.

Research: Niche partitioning of migratory bats
By combining data for morphology, diet, and stable isotopes of fur, we describe and compare the realized niches of three species of insectivourous bats (hoary, silver-haired, and little brown Myotis bats) which migrate to the Cypress Hills of southern Saskatchewan, Canada in the summer.

Organization: Global Union for Bat Diversity Networks
We are an international collaborative research team that is organizing the first effort to accurately age bats in a field setting. Using MinION with support from a BentoLab portable sequencing technology, we will test its utility as a field tool to molecularly age bats in real time with the purpose of developing a standardized protocol to deliver in a classroom format.
